GREAT DIVIDE BASIN, WY
After last night‘s storm contorted my tent into bizarre shapes and blew dust over everything, I awoke with the wind abated. I filled water from the great source I camped near and was on my way.
The morning was pretty easy and despite a bright and intense sun the temperature didn’t get over 90 degF. I made pretty good progress and had 15 miles by lunch
Things got more challenging later. The trail disappeared and I found myself bushwhacking through rocks and sagebrush. As a guy who builds trails I sometimes have to scratch my head.
Into the evening I was hunting for the final water source to setup camp. I was giving up hope and cursing the ground I trod when I magically found actual tread. Just as the sun had set, the water source emerged. There was a sign stating that a hiker friendly fountain had been provided, but I couldn’t find it. Regardless, I cooked dinner and laid out under the stars only 9 miles from Rawlins
The basin was not what I expected, but in a good way. Its quite a special 122 miles.
