SNOW LAKE, NM
If I never have another stream crossing in my life, I probably won’t complain
My map says there were 83 crossings of the Gila River. I didn’t count, but if I had tried I would have lost count. My shoes and socks were constantly soaked and heavy. Crossing the river slows you down, as well as presents a danger on the slippery river rocks. The flood two years ago washed everything but the kitchen sink downstream, so there was lots of climbing over and around debris. Trying to find trail is pretty daunting, as it often disappears on the other side of the river.
I think this was my toughest day so far. Three nice things though:
– I stepped into a pool and saw about 8 full size trout
– I found a great swim hole. On a hot summer day it would be great. Today I dove in and out quickly: COLD
– If it weren’t for the difficulty of the hike, I would highly recommend it for the scenery
I went about 20 miles, but it feels like more. I made it to Snow Lake, which was my goal. Tomorrow I hope to dry off on the way to Pie Town.
