DUBOIS, WY
I got a good early start for my 7 miles to the highway. I kept my feet dry for several stream crossings until I slipped on a rock and put my 4 day old Soloman’s into deep mud. Heck!
I passed by the Brooks Lake park and resort, which is rather plush, and was on the gravel road for what I thought was an easy walk. I started getting cell service and climbed up a ridge to see if I could reserve a hotel room. Every place is booked.
Now I was concerned. I continued down the gravel until I checked my GPS and found myself way off trail. I could hear cars on the freeway straight ahead, but I didn’t know if the road I was on was going to take me there. I backtracked about a mile to find tread going down the hill.
This tread disappeared and it became a dreadful bushwhack. I couldn’t tell if I was supposed to walk through a very thick marsh or along a ridge, so I just kept going up and down until I finally hit the highway.
So now I was trying to hitch 28 miles into town. Lots of cars passed without slowing down. After about 20 minutes I saw a pickup come the other direction, let out a passenger, and ask if I needed a ride. HeHo!
The passenger was Mountain Spice who I remember from New Mexico. The driver was this great guy named Eric, who told me about events in town including an obstacle course benefit tomorrow morning, which sounds like fun. I told him about my lodging challenge, and he called someone who gave me two nights of lodging for no charge. HEHO!!
I got my shower and laundry at the laundromat, had 2 cream filled donuts (YES), a nice BBQ brisket sandwich, and somewhere lost my health insurance card (heck). I did town chores and had dinner at the Cobbler.
